Video Content Creation - Think Mobile

by Yolanda Ocon

Whenever you are creating video content, especially for food brands, it is easy to think that one approach will fit all your needs. We’ve had cases in the past where mid shoot the client comes back to us and tells us, “Oh, can we also have this in landscape?” You should see the look of despair from the team at that precise moment.

Whilst editing the already created footage to fit different screens and dimensions could work, it is not the ideal practice. If you want to have impeccable videos that have the impact and reach your brand deserves, it’s important that it is clear from the beginning what the purpose of the new set of videos is and all the possible scenarios you think you’ll use the videos in.

When talking about video for social media platforms, Instagram and TikTok are the leading ones and where we suggest you put your focus.

Instagram supports video in different sizes and dimensions. Below is a list for you to have in mind when brainstorming your next video campaign.

  • Portrait (vertical) - 1080 x 1350 pixels

  • Landscape (horizontal) - 1080 x 608 pixels

  • Square - 1080 x 1080 pixels

Square and vertical tend to perform better on the platform. One of the main reasons for this is that it gives a better user experience, and you’ll be using all the prime space that Instagram offers when uploading a video with those dimensions.

When it comes to TikTok, portrait is the way to go, while you can post in landscape, this is not advisable at all as TikTok is a portrait oriented app and all their features are created based on that.

Knowing the orientation of your video early on, will allow you and your creative team to work on the best video composition to make sure that all the important moments are captured in the right way.

The length of the video will vary depending on the goal of the video, but remember to keep in mind people’s short attention spans and fierce content competition. Aim for the first few seconds of the video to be eye catching and engaging enough so that your audience watches the clip all the way through.

I won’t bore you with the rest of the technicalities such as frame rate, resolution and size of files. The team here at Curious Crab are experts at these things which means your only job will be to have a load of good ideas and a vision for your brand for us to portray.

At the end of the day, like we’ve said in the past, it’s all about planning and working with the right team.
